Privacy

Hockey Bytes counts visits to learn which pages and features are useful. We do this ourselves: there are no cookies, no advertising or analytics companies, and no third-party scripts. We only look at totals across all visitors, never at what one person does.

What we count

  • Which pages are viewed, and the website that linked to the page (its domain only).
  • Campaign tags in a link you followed (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign).
  • Which parts of a page are seen and used, and which links are clicked.
  • Your device type (phone, tablet or desktop), browser and operating system names, without versions.
  • Whether your screen is narrow or wide, not its exact size.
  • Whether your device is set to dark mode and to reduce motion.

What we never keep

To tell how many different people visit each day, our server combines your IP address and browser details with a random value that is replaced every day, and keeps only a scrambled result. The IP address and browser details themselves are never stored. Because the random value changes daily, your visits on different days cannot be connected to each other, or to you.

We never store your IP address, your full browser details, anything you type, or the full address of the pages you visit (anything after a ? is removed). We set no cookies and store no identifier on your device.

How long we keep it

We delete the counted visits after 13 months.

Our hosting provider, Render, keeps its own short-term logs of requests to our server so it can run the service. Those logs are kept for up to 7 days and may include technical details of each request, such as IP addresses. We do not use them for counting visits.

How to opt out

Any of these stops your visits from being counted:

  • The links below. They apply to this browser on this device only. Clearing this site's data in your browser resets them.
  • Global Privacy Control. If your browser sends this signal, we count nothing. It is built into browsers such as Firefox, Brave and DuckDuckGo, and available as an extension for others.
  • Do Not Track. If your browser sends this setting, we count nothing.
  • Blocking JavaScript or using a content blocker. Either stops the counting script from running.
